My Father's Daughter

This Post has been selected  by Blogadda as Spicy Saturday Picks

My father and i share the same numerological number.  We are both number 2.  And as per Mum we have many common traits.

This post is dedicated to you Dad.  For instilling in me the right sanskars, which go a long way in making me the person  I am.

Growing  up in a cosmopolitan Civil Aviation Training Centre in the 70s, in Allahabad was  bliss.  The fact that Dad was in Government Service and raised four daughters, meant everything was disciplined.  But there was no dearth of love, care and adventure.  Trips to Melas, Circus, the Allahabad city, studying in St Mary's Convent and later in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Swimming in the Centre's swimming pool and watching movies in the Amphitheater, the  monthly Tambola sessions at the club, participating in the Cultural programmes organized by the Welfare department every time a batch of  Trainees left , Taking part in the games organized by the club, we lived it all.

Today on Father's day, i recall details of how you taught me to live life completely and  meaningfully.

You were always fond of quotations and encouraged me  to make my personal book of quotes.  And you loved to  make a point via quotes.

You instilled in me the importance of Getting up early.  "Early to bed and Early to rise, makes a man Health,  Wealthy and Wise".  Further you would say"

Uth jaag musafir bhor bahi

Ab rain kahan jo sovat hai

Jo sovat hai wo khovat hai

Jo jagat hai vo pavat hai

Loosely translated in English, it says:

Wake up Traveler, its morning now

It is not night that your are still sleeping

The one who awakes is the one who gains

The one who sleeps is the one who looses

Thanks to this teaching, i am a morning person.  And if i happen to get up late on any given day, i feel my day has been wasted and i am not in control.

As a student, you instilled in me the importance of Hard work.  I remember you quoting Henry Longfellow:

"The heights achieved by men, and kept,

Were not attained by sudden flight,

But they, while their companions slept,

Were toiling upwards through the night"

Whenever you wanted me to change  a bad habit like biting  nails or some other habit you would give us the example of 'Green stick and Brown stick'.  You would tell us a green stick can  bend and change,  but once your bad habit is formed, it become like a brown stick that is rigid and cannot change.

You had Green fingers and loved to grow flowers and vegetables in the garden.  I grew up watching you patiently tending to plants and have imbibed your love of plants.

You taught me about Fleixibility.  You would told me, " When a storm comes, the tree that bends , remains intact, but that tree that doesn't bend gets uprooted and dies".

You taught me about Humility. You  showed me the lemon tree  laden with lemons and said, "When a tree bears fruit, it bows down".

You taught me to Focus in life.  You told me, " When Dronancharya  gave  his disciples the task of  aiming  an arrow at a bird in the tree, he asked his disciples one by one what they saw.  Some said they saw the sky, other said they saw the clouds, others said the tree and some said the bird.  It was only Arjun who said that all he saw was the 'eye of bird'.  Till date when some important project is at hand, i get all charged up and give my full attention to it, till the task is done.

You were influenced by Dale Carnegies' book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People"  You instilled in me the importance of being soft spoken and having Perfect Etiquettes. You said, "Good manners cost nothing but can buy everything".

You taught me about Patience.  You would sit with  me and sort out my stamp collection.  Together we would painstakingly cut the stamps from the envelope, dip it in a mug of water and allow it to soften.  We would then take it out and allow it dry.  Once dried we would store them in individual envelopes labelled with country name.

You taught me  not to be hasty in life.  You would say  "Haste makes Waste" and "Patience bears fruit". We would pluck Sharifa (custard apple) from the trees and carefully  wrap it in newspaper and wait for about a week for it to ripen.  You would allow us to eat them only only they were perfectly ripe.

You taught me  how to be Caring .  You would get up in the middle of the night to nurse my boils when i was a kid.  Today, you never hesitate to help Mum whenever there is a stop gap arrangement with the maid.

You taught me to be Brave in face of adversity.  Recently when you had to undergo two surgeries, you were so brave about it.  I still remember , as the nurse wheeled you out of the ICU for a check up, you gave me  a broad smile, when i enquired about your well being.  I was astounded as you were lying on a Hi Tech bed with lots of monitors and half a dozen tubes coming  out from your chest.  You dealt with your health issues head on.

You taught me to be Generous in life.  You would quote in Punjabi,  " Rab neeta noon bhaag laganda hai".  Loosely translated it means, 'God gives you your Destiny as per your mentality'

At 82, there  is Sparkle in your eye, Grace on your face and Enthusiasm in your gait.  In words of your grandchildren. "You Truly Rock"!.

May God  bless you with good health and long life so that your daughters and your grand children can continue to receive your blessings.

Life is short.  You never know what the next moment may bring.  So i thought of writing this post.

Life is not perfect always.  But we can fill it with perfect moments.  This is one such perfect moment.  Happy Father's Day Papa :)

From Russia, With Love

For any Blogger, the word 'TRRAFIC' spells magic. HOW much traffic?  WHERE in the world  is it coming from? WHO are the people reading my Blog? etc.For the whole purpose of Blogging is for people to read your Blog.  And if  the readers leave a comment, it  is bonus!

So, like any other Blogger i too take great interest to track my 'Stats'.

India, United States, United Kingdom, Ukraine, RUSSIA, Canada, Israel, Germany, Australia, Iran, in that order  are the main readers. With Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Qatar, Kuwait, Ireland, Dubai, Poland, Czech Republic , Spain, New Zealand, Nigeria, Algeria, Indonesia, Phillipines and a few others thrown in.

Now, for a long time now, i have been  noting the '.ru 'ending in the URLs.  At first i was happy that  Russians were reading my Blogs.  But as the number of URLS with '.ru' kept on increasing, i decided to do a little investigation.

This is what i discovered after clicking the TRANSLATE button on these sites :

The first one is from the site lookserial:
"Soaps give us a wonderful opportunity to live their lives together with heroes.  rejoice in their success and disappointments do not empathize with a short period of their lives, as it happens in the movies and watch entire episodes and life  span.  But watch series on TV is extremely tedious because on TV show only one series per day or even a week. And the series end with the most interesting place and to want to continue viewing! But we have to wait until the next day at breakneck pace to run to home to turn on the TV, and a screen appears that you have already forgotten about yesterday was all about.  Downloading srialov (??) is a fairly lengthy process, which is difficult to finis, so this occupation is abandoned halfway through and watch episode fails.  Thanks to modern equipment all seasons and all the series favorite series are available to you online, at any time.  In this case, all serials on the site for free and add to our database entirely.  You can easily chose your season and series and enjoy watching.  And when the series is over –watch the next or return to the series when the time.  It is very convenient because now is the time to show your choice, and next change yourself for a television program.  The more you will not miss the series  on TV when you are late to work, meet friend or go on business.  From site lookserial favorite characters will be with you when it is convenient.  Number of videos on the site is constantly growing.  Here you can find Russian serial and telenovela , and foreign hits and new items.  We should also note that viewing is carried out without registration and without prescription (!) which is often found on other sites.  All that you need – is to select episodes for viewing ,and a wealth of information about each of them and availability of help is ranking.  Enjoy viewing and do not forget to share a link with your friends."

The second one is from a site selling Corner Computer Tables.....

"No matter how big or small your computer, hold him or the time to work much easier and more enjoyable if he is on his tailored just for him. And unless you can find the best place for a computer than a specially made by his computer desk? Of course not, wherever you pritknuli himself along with all the multimedia bells and whistles and wires, you'll feel uncomfortable, even though the work at a laptop becomes much more enjoyable and more productive if you can settle for the convenient computer desk."

The third one is from a site selling Computer Games
"Hello dear Readers! You are actually unique in the whole webcams blog about games.

This blog is dedicated gamers and real gamers.
This blog is about something that concerns the Gaming industry.
Here you will find the latest news the game world, game
reviews, screen shots, games, videos and music.
Blog will evolve and improve with time.

Life is a game.  Living – play. Playing a – live.  Playing – the game. Living – live! "

The fourth one is from a site 'SEGOL':

"Look for quality Advertising Program?  Place their banner across their site, choose your display area."

The fifth one is from an Event Management company:

" Toastmaster Helena - holding celebrations"
Dear friend you got right on target, because the best without a miss.

Celebrations, large or small, be sure you will cover a wave of vivid impressions, rich color, good music and positive emotions..... if it is taken for " Toastmaster Helena and her creative team".

Offer to perform : Weddings, Anniversaries, Corporate parties, Hen, Stag, Theme parties, Sport's day, Children's parties, Proms, Videography, Design balloons and Flowers.

So, what are these sites doing visiting my  Blog?  Should i be Happy? Honored? Amused? Indifferent?

What do your say?  One thing is for sure.  RUSSIA is on my 'Must Visit' travel list for sure!

As You Turn 21, Surbhi

The Countdown begins.  In Ten hours from now  we will witness a momentous occasion.  What is so special about this occasion? Tomorrow is June 12, 2011. It is hard to believe that my younger daughter turns 21 today. True, its happening today!

When your sister turned 21, i wasn't a blogger. But now I am. so I have decided to convey my feelings today via this post.Hope you'll like it :)

You were born in peak of summers. I couldn't eat properly that last few months while i was carrying you, hence you were not as weighty as your sister who was a good 9 pounds. But right from the first day, you knew how to call for attention. Every time you were hungry or wet, you cried lustfully, making me leave everything and attend to you.

Unlike your sister you grew up on milk and less of solids. perhaps that explains your slim and delicate frame. I am still waiting for the day you'll put on a few kilos.

As you grew up you took a liking to dahi chawal. Mum would always make it a point to have this dish at home whenever we visited her. At times i  would be worried whether  you would ever develop a liking for pulses and vegetables but you eat almost everything now. This was the first of many surprised you would give me.

You were an average child academically and had problems learning Social Studies in class 10th. I was very worried about this but you surprised us once again by clearing the boards. I remember hugging you in the Cyber cafe where we checked the result and lifting you and saying... " i don't care about the score. I am so happy you made it".

Like your sister you opted for Commerce.  And in your Senior secondary results you scored a high first division, once again surprising us all. I remember going to the Yum Yum Tree in Friends colony to celebrate your result.

As you were so frail, i was always overtly protective of you. I never thought you would be able to learn riding a bicycle but you did. Having done that i was pretty sure your frail constitution and light weight would not allow you to ride a two wheeler. But you proved me wrong. Having done that i was once again skeptical that you would have the confidence to drive a car, but you proved me wrong yet again. Here, a word of caution. Drive safe. Drive slow.

Your creative skills were brought to the fore when you gave a Dhamaka performance at Nana Nani's golden anniversary. You conceived, choreographed a solo performance to Bollywood songs. You looked awesome in the fuchsia lehnga choli and i was thrilled to bits at your performance . So was everyone else present there.

Your networking skills gave your sister her first break in Ramp Walk Modelling. thanks to you, your sister walked the ramp at the NIFT annual convocation. Boy, were we all so excited!

Recently you took part in your Univ's Annual fest and won prizes too. Your  many colorfully designed certificates will always be  a wonderful memory of that.

Your affinity for the computer, your investigative streak is responsible for you being tech and gizmo Savvy. What would your sis and i do if your weren't around?

Your fondness for dogs, your natural affinity for babies and children, your inclination towards cooking are all gr8 interests. And your weakness for chocolates brings out the child in you.

During you graduation you enjoyed univ life to max. going to Delhi and other hot spots of NCR was very much a part of your Univ life. I know , all those pics you took of your friends will be cherished for life.

Your soft, pure heart is God's gift. As you grow older, you'll become wiser and seasoned. But never let the child within you get lost in life's maze.

You are through with your final semester exams and once the results are out, you'll be a certified Graduate.

You have already chosen your vocation and start your further studies in three weeks from now. Your wish of Studying in Delhi has come true.

On your 21st birthday i would like  you to make note of these 10 things:

1. Believe in yourself.

2.  Believe in the almighty and form a beautiful strong relationship with God, based on absolute Faith.

3.  Believe in your dreams. Some will come true and some  might not. But a life without dreams is meaningless.

4.  You have many friend and will  make many more in the journey of life.  But remember that your relationship with your only sister is as fool proof as granite.

5.  Your  Time management and  organizational skills are great.  Make sure it gets only better.

6.  It is fine to go to beauty parlous and spas to pamper yourself.  But to have good skin and healthy hair and good health, drink lots of water to flush out toxins from the body.

7. Have seasonal fruits  in between  meals and  always eat a generous helping of salads.

8.  Cultivate the habit of reading.  Be aware of what's happening around you and the world.

9.  Always  Be Positive.  Even during times of distress believe in God.  Visit Temples regularly especially when stressed out, to gain peace, calmness and strength,  and move ahead in life with positivity.

10.  Remember you are born a woman.  And we are known to nurture life and relationships.  Always believe in giving more than expecting in return.  Life will surely come a full circle.

Today, I am so proud to be your Mum. Truly blessed to have a daughter like you. I know as you grow, you'll mature, and become seasoned. But never ever let the core of your being go away. Keep the softness and purity at heart while you evolve as a human being.

On your 21st birthday you are now, no longer a teen but a young lady! Your Dad and your sis join me praying to the Almighty to bless you today and always. May he guide you in your future studies and later in your job. May you continue to be always special and close to the heart of your loved ones.

 21st BIRTHDAY Surbhi!

Sunday, June 5, 2011

Today June 5, 2011 is World Environment Day. This day is observed each year to focus attention on emerging environmental issues and to create  public awareness. WED is a day for people  from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter environment for themselves and  the future generation

For WED 2011, United Nations Environment Programme , UNEP  has given the theme as 'Forests : Nature at Your Service"

2011 is also the International Year of Forests.

Forests are vital for human existence.

Forest products are used in our daily lives.  Fruits, paper and wood from trees.  Not to forget medicine, cosmetics, detergents and more.

Looking beyond the narrow frame of Human consumption, forests provide habitat to diverse animal species, besides providing livelihood to many different human settlements.

They offer watershed protection, timber and non timber products and recreational options. A holiday in Kerala without experiencing the joy of a Tree House would be no fun .  Right?

They prevent soil erosion, help in maintaining the water cycle, check Global warming by using carbon dioxide in photosynthesis. And the most vital thing for humans - Oxygen.  We get it thanks to Trees.

Inspite of knowing these facts, over the past five decades, half the world's original forest cover has been lost due to man's selfish misuse of the natural resources.

If the forests go away, it is not just the trees that go.  The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for mankind and its survival on Planet Earth.

This year, India is host to this International event .  So how has the Capital prepared itself for this event?  Pretty good i'd say.  For instead of celebrating this event on a single day, Delhi has kept aside Five days from June 1 to June 5, 2011,  to make the citizens aware of the importance of preserving our Environment.

 “Green Haat” a unique exhibition

currently underway at Dilli Haat, INA Market that showcases India’s forest heritage through forest handicrafts, herbal and medical products and forest based food recipes.

Fifty‐three stalls from across the country selling products made by Self‐Help Groups from forest and tribal areas reveal the diversity of Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and related livelihoods in India.

As i walked inside Dilli  Haat yesterday , i saw eye catching and thought provoking message banners on  both sides of the pathway , leading up to the Stalls.

Green Haat is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Development Programme and the Centre for Environment Education.

The many stalls had various Eco friendly forest products. From Organic cereals and pulses

To jute products

to a variety of seeds and grains

to Honey packed in polybags

to Pickles.....

But this is not all.  The Five day celebration is spread throughout the length and breadth of our country.  From setting up of Knowledge Park by schoolchildren from Delhi, to  Bio Diversity Film Festival in various venues and one in  Tihar Jail too!

Painting competition, Nature Camps for children with special needs in Bangalore and Bannetghata National park.

Exhibition on Mumbai's Environment at Chhatrapati Shivaji & Churchgate Stations to Dialogue with Business Community on Green Economy in Delhi.

Press Conference at Dilli Haat to Nature Campos at Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary.

Interaction with the IT Leaders in Bangalore. Walkathon at Delhi from India Gate and Marathon at Bangalore to Seminar on " Nature and Livelihoods: Women's Perspective" in Delhi.

Inauguration of North East Museum Gallery at Bhubaneshwar.

For Delhi  Senior Citizens there is good news.  A Park near  The Leela, Africa Avenue is being dedicated to Senior Citizens.

So, when so much is being done to create  awareness throughout the country, what can you and I do to contribute to save our environment and counter Climate Change?

Here are a few things WE CAN:

Use efficient lighting like CFLs.

Use an Energy efficient Computer

Drive Less

Check your tyres

Use water carefully

Say "NO" to Plastic

Plant more trees

Turn off electronic devices

Reuse and Recycle.

So today, spread the word.  Guide and tell your children about importance of preserving our Environment.  So that we can enjoy what God has given mankind for generations to come.  Act before it is too late!

Come Summers, and the market is flooded with a variety of melons.  Perhaps the most tantalizing view is one of a pile of water melons, with an artistically cut fruit, displaying its red flesh dotted with black seeds, perched atop the pile.

Water Melons or Tarbooz is a favorite summer fruit and has immense health benefits

  • Watermelons, being rich in potassium, help keep salt from raising blood pressure and might diminish the risk of kidney stones also.
  • It is said that watermelons strengthen the immune system and help the body in fighting off infection.
  • Watermelon is a very concentrated source of the carotenoids, which have been credited with cancer-preventing properties.
  • Consumption of water melons has been found to result in alleviation of some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Watermelon is rich in some of the most important antioxidants and helps the body in neutralizing free radicals and thus, diminishes the risk of colon cancer.
  • The antioxidants in watermelons help reduce the risk of heart attack in individuals.
  • Watermelon is very low in calories, making it the perfect snack for those who are trying to lose weight.
  • Watermelons have been associated with reducing the airway spasm that occurs in asthma.
  • The beta carotene present in water melon helps keeps your vision sharp, especially at night.
  • Watermelons have been linked with easing inflammation and preventing the occurrence of diabetes.
We also get an abundance of Musk Melons or Kharbooza

The melons come in a variety that can be enjoyed by all.  The  yellow colored

melon called Canary Melon  or Sarda, is also  available. now throughout the year in my fruit market.

An then there is the other variety called Cantaloupes

or 'Rock Melon'.

The benefits of melons are many:

  • Muskmelon comprises of a significant amount of dietary fiber, making it good for those suffering form constipation.
  • Since the fruit is not high in sugar or calories, it serves as a good snack for all those who are trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy body.
  • The potassium present in muskmelons makes them quite helpful in the lowering of blood pressure.
  • The fruit has been associated with regulating heart beat and, possibly, preventing strokes.
  • Researches have suggested that muskmelons might reduce the risk of developing kidney stones and age-related bone loss.
  • Being rich in Vitamin C, an antioxidant, the fruit has been believed to be good for preventing heart diseases, cancer and other chronic ailments.
  • Muskmelons have been found to have sedative properties, making them beneficial for the people who are suffering from insomnia.
  • The fruit has almost zero cholesterol and thus, is safe for the people who suffer from the problem of high blood cholesterol.
  • Regular consumption of muskmelon juice can help treat lack of appetite, acidity, ulcer and urinary tract infections.
  • Since it has high water content, the fruit can help reduce the heat in the body and thus, prevent heat-related disorders.
  • The fruit proves to be a good source of vitamin A and thus, helps maintain healthy skin.
  • The folic acid present in muskmelons helps create healthy fetuses (in pregnant women) and can even prevent cervical cancer and osteoporosis. It also serves as a mild antidepressant.
  • If you are feeling too tired on a hot summer day, consume a muskmelon and you will find yourself refreshed and energized.
So beat the heat in Summers by  eating a generous helping of assorted melons

and pave your way to Good Health.
